On Sunday night, two of my cravings were satiated: Cafe Habana and Paper Raincoat.
To keep up with the spirit of the weekend of freedom, I met up for a late dinner with Judy, Dave, Angela, and Amber at Cafe Habana to be followed by a secret set at Rockwood, the aptly named band, “Cardboard Bikini”. Heh!
Needless to say, I was starving and while everyone else got the grilled corn, I added a mushroom burrito to my order. No, seriously, the best grilled corn ever. It’s slathered in butter, topped with cheese, sprinkled with cayenne pepper, and complimented with a lime slice. It’s a cob of perfection. And I totally housed the burrito as well, I was starving! And a hungry Mir is not a pleasant Mir… I highly recommend stopping by the take-out window if you find yourself near Prince Street.
We headed to Rockwood taking a shortcut on Urine Street. It’s not really called that, but it should.
Rockwood was at capacity for Paper Raincoat and though we found spot with a clear eyeline, it was also exactly behind where The Tall People decided to be. They also blew kisses.
To summarize, The Paper Raincoat is the collaboration between Amber Rubarth and Alex Wong who have solo career and also play with others in the NYC “scene”. The songs are a narrative about a fictional group of people in NYC when pieced together will be like a novel…or perhaps a movie, or musical theatre…
I’m being cheeky.
The show was sweaty and great with minor technical confusions. Since it was a “secret show”, they tried to rename their songs as well. Such as “Mystic Rain Part 1″, “Mystic Rain Part 2″, “Knight Rider”, and lots of songs with “love” in the title. They played the hits and everyone sang along and clapped and whooped and hollered. Good times. The more I see them, the more they fill The Weepies gap. I like them a lot, though I do have a gripe with the word “sound” in almost every song.
CD release on Oct 6 with Elizabeth and the Catapult (love love love!) at Joe’s Pub. See you there?
Here is my favorite song of theirs:
And here is the song they end with:
